VOCABULARY: AROUND THE CITY.

1. Vocabulary: public buildings and services.

Building/Place

Description

Example

Health center/ hospital

Where you go if you feel ill or have an emergency.

"The hospital is on Broadway Avenue."

Chemist's (or pharmacy)

A shop where you buy medicine and health products.

"The chemist's is next to the health center".

Police Station

The headquarters for the local police force.

"The police station is on Main Road".

Town Hall

The administrative center of the city or town.

"The town hall is a big building next to the park".

Post Office

Where you send letters, parcels and buy stamps.

"I need to go to the post office to send this letter".

Public Library

A place where you can borrow books or study.

"The library is between the Post office and the Mall".

School/ Secondary School (or High School)/ University

Places for education and learning

"The school is in the North of the city".

Museum

A building with objects of historical or artistic value.

A place where you can watch live plays.

Cinema

A place where you go to watch films (movies).

"The cinema is on the top floor of the mall".

Castle

A large historic building with thick walls.

"The city has a famous medieval castle".

Zoo

A place where many kinds of wild animals are kept.

"The kids want to see the lions at the zoo".

Church

A building used for religious services.

"The church is a beautiful historic building"

Park

A public area with grass and trees.

"The park is in the center of the city".

    A large shop divided into several sections.

    Bus station

    A place where buses start and end their routes.

    "The bus station is near the city centre".

    Railway Station

    A place where trains arrive and depart.

    "The railway station is very busy in the morning".

    Gym

    A place where you go to exercise.

    "The gym is on Elm Street".

    Restaurant

    A place where you can sit and eat a meal.

    "The restaurant is near the cinema".

    An area of approximately square-shaped land in a city or a town, often including the buildings that surround it.

    "The market is held in the main square".

    Street

    A road in a city or town that has buildings.

    "Walk down the street for two blocks".

    Traffic lights

    "Turn left at the traffic lights".

    Corner

    The point formed by the meeting of two roads.

    "The bank is on the corner of the street".

    Road

    a long hard surface built for vehicles to travel along.

    There's a coffee shop on the other side of the road.
